I might misinterpret astrophysics, but I do believe we have always been particles with the characteristics of objects a tangible mass. We have just accumulated into bodies of billions of things for a very short period of time (in celestial terms)
Do we seize being things ever?
Does one particle of our whole body define us, if so, what particle is it?
